How can a high-performance building be built in an urban setting? Come to the March meeting and find out.

At first glance, high-performance buildings may seem difficult to achieve. However, with proper planning, they are readily achievable at scale and can meet construction budget expectations.

This month's meeting will include lunch and a tour of Campus Square, designed and built to be as environmentally responsible as possible with advanced energy and building system technologies. The building is heated and cooled by a geothermal system which has a 400-foot-deep well field located under the building. A 42.5 kW solar array on the building’s roof provides approximately 20% of the building’s electricity, and a prototype green roof was installed on the overhang to the main entrance.

After the tour, Doug Neidich, CEO of GreenWorks Development, and Chip Brown, President, and CEO of McClure Company, will present on Campus Square. The building has achieved LEED Gold Status. The building’s energy and insulation systems yield energy costs of approximately $0.65/square foot for standard office use, compared to $2.00 to $2.25 for a conventional class-A building. Come and hear how this is achieved, the lessons learned after a decade of operation, and how buildings like this are financed.

The presentation will also include the comparison of solar from the initial 2008 installation to today's PV solar system specs and costs along with a discussion of the marketing value of a green commercial building by comparison market values from 2008 to present.
