MicroCHP and Gas-fired VRF Systems—Economic advantages

$25.00 CP AEE Member

$30.00 Guest

In recent years, our chapter has offered tours of CHP installations that have ranged from ±500 kW to 1100 MW combined cycle power plants. This month’s meeting will focus on micro-CHP systems that consist of modular units that range from 10 kW to 35 kW. The modules can be combined to make larger systems. The meeting will also cover an upcoming alternative to the standard variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system offering.

Michael Alfano from YANMAR will present on applications and economics of micro-CHP systems. How can they be applied in new construction? When do they make sense in retrofit projects?

A second part of the presentation will cover variable refrigerant flow systems (VRF)—but with a different energy source. Michael Alfano will briefly review VRF systems and focus in on using gas-fired heat pumps versus electric-based systems. With the potential savings of 90% of the electricity usage, the gas heat pump offers another option for HVAC system applications.  The presentation will cover how do the gas-fired heat pumps work? What are their efficiencies? How are they different from the VRF systems we have seen applied in buildings today.

What are the applications for these kinds of systems? What do the economics look like? Come and find out these answers and more.

We look forward to seeing you at this first session of the new year.

Presenter Bio

Michael Alfano became the Yanmar America Energy Systems Regional Sales and Service Manager in August of 2014.  He has extensive experience in all aspects of combined heat and power (CHP), alternative energy systems, power storage, and energy management systems. He also has experience with Yanmar VRF Gas Heat Pumps. He has developed and delivered complex solutions to customers. Michael Alfano joined YANMAR Energy Systems after spending fourteen years at Mack Boring & Parts Company as an Operations Manager and Production Manager.  Mack Boring is a Major Distributor of Yanmar Marine and Industrial engines covering 27 states with 240 dealers.
