Take a tour of one of the areas larger central plants

We will start this month's meeting at the North Office Building in Hearing Room #2 for a presentation about the Capitol Complex Central Cooling Plant which plant operates 7/24/365 and supplies cooling and some heating to 4.5 Million square feet of Commonwealth office space including the Capitol building. The plant operates with 3-3000 ton York chillers and 1-1500 ton Trane chiller.  The plant is located underground at the solder’s grove of the Capitol Complex.

After the presentation, we will walk to the plant and take a tour.

Parking information

There are a variety of public parking garages the two closest are: 7th and Forster and 4th and Market.  There is also metered street parking all surrounding the Complex.  

Attire for the plant tour: This is a mechanical space so proper attire will be necessary, no loose clothing, no high heel shoes, any long hair must be contained, no long skirts.  Hearing protection is recommended but we will not be inside the plant long enough to reach any noise exposure thresholds.   

Speaker Bio Information:

Douglas Hatcher

Mr. Hatcher has been with the Department of General Services for 15 years, 5 of those years he was the Section Chief for the HVAC section that included the Central Plant operation.    During that time he coordinated $7.6 million of improvements/repairs to the Capitol Complex HVAC and plumbing infrastructure.  Currently, he is serving at the Director of the Energy and Resource Management Office which is responsible for the GESA programs for the Commonwealth facilities across Pennsylvania. 

Richard Pastula

Mr. Pastula has been with the Department of General Services for 20+ years. Most of that time served as an HVAC Supervisor in the Central Plant.  Mr. Pastula’s knowledge, experience, and perspective have been critical in achieving the operational improvements and energy conservation efforts.
